Aranmula is a collaboration between British composer Lucy Hudson and Australian composer Leah Barclay who met in South India while studying carnatic music in early 2008. The two composers returned to India in November that year to compose a series of works inspired by their immersion in Indian culture. Their fluency in western classical music, combined with extensive performance, improvisation and composition experience has allowed the composers to create a compelling and diverse fusion album. Aranmula features outstanding performances from ‘Nada Laya’ in a rich sonic landscape ranging from hydrophone recordings deep in the pamba river to pilgrims chanting at dusk in the Aranmula temple. Composed, recorded and produced exclusively in Kerala, South India, Aranmula has laid the foundation for many more intercultural collaborations in this region.
